In Better Air's field experience, AprilAire cabinet media is the top recommendation when the home has, or is upgrading to, the correct cabinet. The cabinet and media fit matter as much as the nominal size.

Choose the filter path before you shop
Start with the nominal size printed on the filter, then choose the depth/type and filtration level that fits your system.

Why depth matters
4-inch filters usually have more media surface area than 1-inch filters, which can often mean better airflow and longer service life when correctly fitted. 1-inch filters are common and simple, but usually need more frequent replacement.
MERV caution
Higher MERV is not automatically better if the system cannot handle the airflow resistance. If the system already struggles with airflow, do not jump straight to the highest MERV without confirming compatibility.
General replacement guidance
1-inch filters: check/change about monthly.
4-inch filters: check/change about every 3 months.
AprilAire MERV 11/13: check around 6 months; many systems can go up to 12 months.
AprilAire MERV 16: about 6 months.
These are general starting points, not guarantees. Dust, pets, fan runtime, construction, smoke, and system airflow can change the right schedule.
